WHY GO? Samui doesn’t boast that many Japanese eateries but Tai, in the heart of Chaweng beach, excels. The atmosphere is one of relaxed fun.
WHAT TO ORDER? The menu is extensive, so some tempting choices may have to wait for a second visit. Grilled tuna steak with wasabi and asparagus sauce is a delectable, tender slab of luxury. Lobster volcano, baked and served with mango and white sauce is another upscale delight. Ishiyaki waygu beef, imported from Japan, is served on a stone grill with sides of the most colourful local vegetables. If small portions on a stick are your thing, try emmental cheese wrapped in bacon or chicken wrapped with leek, both firm favourites with regulars. Creme brulee is the pick of the desserts, served warm with fresh mango.
