Setting

The cuisine of northeastern Thailand is incredibly popular as street food and here it is elevated to the comfort of a small laid-back restaurant. Somtum Der, whose New York branch earned a Michelin star in 2015, offers a variety of som tums which can be hard to find these days.

Food

Try tum sua sakon nakorn made with noodles, fermented crab and fish, and sprinkled popinac seeds. Soup normai, made with fermented thin strips of bamboo shoot, is another succulent option. For a heavier dish, opt for moo rong hai der, marinated pork eaten with a spicy dip. Sapoak gai tod der, fried chicken thigh with crunchy skin, is a yummy choice that should counter the spiciness of the other dishes. Of course, all these offerings are accompanied by sticky rice, either black or regular. Sweet course options are minimal but focus on traditional Thai desserts. Try taro in condensed milk or pink water chestnuts in condensed milk for an uplifting end to a unique meal.

Wine

There are few wine options but local beer and some whiskies are offered. As far as non-alcoholic beverages go, there are some interesting fruit juices and teas.
