Setting

Named for a subdistrict of Phuket, it comes as no surprise that Na Chalong’s menu places traditional southern Thai dishes front and centre. Expect friendly and welcoming service.

Food

While southern Thai cuisine is known for its potent spiciness, the heat factor seems to have been toned down here. Order a few dishes to share. The rice noodles served in a spicy curry with crab meat and wild betel leaves is certainly a menu highlight. Another traditionally southern dish that is well worth trying is stir-fried shrimp with stink beans and shrimp paste. Eaten on its own, it is perhaps not everybody’s cup of tea, but when accompanied by the piquant shrimp paste, which adds an acidic, sour dimension to counter the saltiness, the dish becomes elevated. Lime pork is another tasty option in which tender pork slices and Chinese kale leaves are drenched in a spicy garlic lime dressing. Finally, do try the flavoursome signature dish of yellow curry with sea bass and coconut shoots. Conclude with a delicious serving of banana roti with vanilla ice cream—similar to a banana fritter only much better.
