Mix may not be the most sophisticated of restaurants, but it is adventurous and constantly in flux, as its owner perfects a new dish or decides to add a wine bar, or as he has recently done, an art gallery to the garden restaurant.

There are literally hundreds of dishes on the menu, which is fun for those seeking new culinary adventures but also frustrating if you don’t want to spend an hour on your food choice. The dishes are an odyssey of Lanna fusion, classic Thai favourites, French and European fare, and Japanese, Chinese and Indian dishes—basically whatever the owner and chef conjure up to add to the mix du jour. You can start your meal with French oysters freshly flown in that morning or a classic Thai wing bean salad which comes with an oozing onsen egg. Meat lovers will appreciate the 17-hour grilled beef short rib with penang sauce, which arrives tender and bursting with flavour. Stir-fried mud crab in curry powder is also a big hit, with generous chunks of crab meat infused with an assortment of aromatic herbs. Make room for the many desserts, some of which arrive looking like works of art. Shredded coconut meringue with chocolate truffle is very good.

The cocktail menu goes on for dozens of pages. There is also a good list of wines from around the world at all price points, as well as a selection of craft and draft beers.
