Bangkok’s fine-dining scene meets fairytale wanderlust at the new pop-up restaurant Wang Hinghoi, the brainchild of Vinij Lertratanachai, Suprerk Rojwongsuriya and Vorarit Fuangaromya. A secret garden tucked into the old RCA Driving Range, Wang Hinghoi offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience by providing an enchanted forest at the heart of Bangkok’s urban metropolis.
Step into the venue through a wood-flanked corridor and you’ll find yourself in a jungle nest environment encompassing sight, sounds and smell. From the specially curated background music to air diffusers spreading thet romantic aroma of after-rain soil, this is the place to be if you’re in search of a fine-dining fantasy unlike any other.
What makes this new pop-up so much more special than the rest? True to its name—wang hinghoi is Thai for "firefly nest"—the restaurant is the only place in Bangkok’s city center where you can dine surrounded by the glow of over 300 live fireflies. Centered on rediscovering nature amidst the chaotic city-life, Wang Hinghoi provides not only the perfectly simulated ecology for fireflies to thrive, but also a touch of much-needed peace and quiet through a concept centred the four key elements earth, water, wind and fire.
The décor and food menu follows a theme that changes seasonally every four months depending on the elements, beginning with the current element ‘earth’. The restaurant is also split into four areas. The first zone, Art Gallery Zone, or the Grow Museum, exhibits works by famous artists, based on the theme of the four elements. The second zone, Nature, sees a colossal wall element that blends all four elements and serves as a pathway through which visitors can enter the unique space. The third zone is the main dining area, a dark and intimate space where contemporary Thai cuisine is served. And lastly, the restaurant’s most exciting highlight is the Hinghoi Area, or Firefly Room, a magnificent glass room where hundreds of live fireflies flourish in an enclosed ecosystem, basking the space in a mesmerizing golden glow.
For cuisine, expect set menus of sumptuous, deconstructed Thai food with a contemporary twist. The current seasonal menu features dishes like spicy shrimp paste wrapped in lotus petal. You can also count on an impressive cocktail team—made up of talents formerly from Ku De Ta and Morimoto—to come up with innovative drinks to pair with your meal here.
Plan and reserve your visit soon though because the restaurant is only temporary. Taking the firefly theme to the next level, Wang Hinghoi will only be in operation for 18 months, following the real lifespan of fireflies for an interesting twist. Guests can choose between two dining options: an eight-course set menu priced at 2,490++ baht or a nine-course set menu at 3,290++ baht. It is also rescommended to go a little later in the evening to truly appreciate the natural firefly light show.
Wang Hing Hoi is open everyday from 6:30-11:30pm.
